Plan around trail closures and changing access

Read the affected segment, check the approach, and keep a mapped route separate from permission to use it.

Reviewed Oct 21, 2026 · Arizona Parks

Start with the named segment

At Tonto Natural Bridge, the reviewed notice closes Pine Creek Trail, Anna Mae Trail and the area under the bridge after rain and flooding. It separately reports Gowan Trail, Waterfall Trail and the paved path above the bridge open. Homolovi closes its Homolovi I pueblo site and trail. These are specific affected areas. A park appearing in a directory does not mean every route within it is available, and a trail notice does not automatically close the whole park.

Check the trailhead as well as the trail

White Tank’s staging-area work blocks access to Ford Canyon, Mesquite Canyon, Mule Deer and Maricopa trails from that parking area. The trails themselves remain open according to the county. The project was extended through October 31, so an earlier completion date is no longer the best planning reference. Read the current closure map before choosing a different trailhead; an open trail does not create permission to cross a work site.

Allow for longer detours and restricted corridors

The Maricopa Trail is rerouted at Skunk Creek Crossing while culverts are installed, with work expected through April 2027. At Coronado National Memorial, Yaqui Ridge Trail is closed from its junction with Joe’s Canyon Trail because of construction and blasting. This affects access to the Arizona National Scenic Trail’s southern terminus. Follow the managing agency’s detour or closure boundary; the line on a recreation map does not override it.

Use the current Grand Canyon list

Grand Canyon’s detailed October 21 report lists extensive inner-canyon closures, including Bright Angel Trail below Mile-and-a-Half Resthouse to Havasupai Gardens, the lower South Kaibab route and the North Kaibab corridor. It gives no reopening estimate. Read the complete current list before selecting a route, then check it again before departure. Our reviewed notice records a source check, not an assurance that conditions will remain the same.
