How we build the directory

The October 21, 2026 launch traversed all 33 destinations in the Arizona State Parks and Trails visitor directory. Thirty-two are public listings; San Rafael remains unpublished because it is not open to the public. We also reviewed 22 National Park Service destinations and the full 14-entry Maricopa County locator. Vulture Mountains remains unpublished during development, and the reservation-only Desert Outdoor Center is recorded within Lake Pleasant.

The directory has 66 public destinations and 2 unpublished candidates. State, federal and county property geometry supports county memberships and mapped trail overlaps. Named OpenStreetMap routes are community mapping, with access and continuity still requiring current verification.

Jurisdiction coverage

All 15 counties have a coverage record. The complete state visitor directory is supplemented by selected federal and county destinations; this is not an inventory of every public park or recreation area. Most municipal, other county, tribal, USFS, BLM and wildlife-refuge destinations remain gaps. Three interstate NPS historic-trail corridors are excluded. Grand Canyon-Parashant lacks a matched boundary in the reviewed NPS dataset, and precise Arizona map points remain unknown where geometry is missing or spans state lines. River Island’s linked camping page redirected to a generic homepage and was excluded from the source review.

Source checks

Notice and inventory checks have separate timestamps. Scheduled refresh is not yet enabled. A source failure leaves its prior notices in place. “Not yet checked” means that source has not been successfully ingested; it does not describe the conditions at a park.

Launch notice review

The October 21 launch review examined 217 items from park pages, linked planning pages, NPS feeds and current conditions, all nine county alerts, county updates and NWS weather alerts. Seventy-two were published, 130 rejected and 15 explicitly deferred. Rejections include expired feed entries, duplicate information, routine hours and unsupported closure implications. Deferred items include unmapped forecast areas, an unreviewed flood-advisory PDF and uncertain local-facility matches. Four source-backed guides explain trail access, boat launches, camping services and reservations/local time. Notices can expire after review; an expired notice does not confirm reopening.

Evidence and automated writing

Structured official notices are processed directly. AI-assisted interpretation and guides require recorded source evidence and an independent claim check. Ambiguous names, uncertain geographic impacts, or unsupported claims enter a review queue.

General seasonal guidance does not establish an infestation or closure at a specific park. Notices say whether their scope is a park, an area, or a region.

Maps and photographs

Park geometry is generalized for planning and is not a legal boundary or navigation product. Maps use OpenStreetMap tiles with attribution. Photograph credits and rights appear alongside the images. Destinations without reviewed photographs use compact text cards.
